The Three Possible Causes
Cause one is a jam. Something hard is wedged in the grinding chamber, preventing the impellers from rotating. The motor tries to spin but cannot. Most common cause.
Cause two is a motor or electrical issue. The motor itself has failed, the reset button has tripped, or there is a circuit breaker issue.
Cause three is a drain clog downstream of the disposal. The disposal grinds fine but the water cannot escape. The chamber fills and stops working effectively.

Symptoms by Cause

Motor or electrical symptoms. Switching the disposal on produces no sound at all. No hum. No click. Complete silence as if the switch is not connected.
Drain clog symptoms. Disposal runs normally. Water in the sink does not drain or drains very slowly. Sometimes water backs up into the other sink basin if you have a double sink.

Fixing a Jammed Disposal
The DIY fix that works for most jams.
Step one. Turn off the power. Switch the wall switch off and unplug the disposal under the sink if possible.
Step two. Look in the disposal with a flashlight. Sometimes the obstruction is visible. If so, remove it with tongs or pliers, never with bare hands.
Step three. Use the hex wrench at the bottom of the disposal. Most disposals have a hex socket at the very bottom of the unit, designed for manually rotating the grinding mechanism. The hex wrench either came with the disposal or is a standard 1/4 inch hex key.
Step four. Insert the wrench and rotate. Back and forth until the mechanism turns freely. This usually frees the jam.
Step five. Press the reset button. Located on the bottom of the disposal. The motor protection trips when it stalls. Reset restores function.
Step six. Restore power and test. With the water running, switch on. The disposal should now run normally.

Fixing Electrical and Motor Issues
Reset button trip. Press the red button on the bottom of the disposal. Restores power if the motor protection tripped.
Circuit breaker trip. Check the breaker panel. The disposal circuit may have tripped.
Switch failure. The wall switch can fail. If voltage at the switch is good but disposal does not respond, switch replacement.
