Grease goes down the drain liquid. Cools in pipes. Hardens. Traps other debris. Clog builds until drain backs up. Then you learn why plumbers say no grease down drains. Part of our complete Drain Maintenance Tips for Homeowners.

What Happens to Grease in Pipes

Hot grease is liquid. Bacon fat, cooking oil, butter. Pours easily down drain. Enters cold pipe. Grease temperature drops. Solidifies. Sticks to pipe walls. Next grease adds layer. Layer builds over months. Diameter of pipe shrinks. Water flows slower. Eventually clogs completely. Drain backs up. Standing water in sink.

Why Hot Water Does Not Help

“I run hot water while pouring grease.” Does not work. Hot water keeps grease liquid for a few feet. Then grease hits cold section of pipe. Grease solidifies there instead of at drain entrance. Problem moved deeper. Harder to clear later. Soap plus hot water theory. Also insufficient. Soap emulsifies grease temporarily. Grease still solidifies downstream. Just takes longer to clog.

Grease Plus Other Debris

Grease alone clogs slowly. Grease plus food particles clogs fast. Food sticks to grease. Hair sticks to grease. Soap scum sticks to grease. Everything builds together. Solid mass forms. Complete blockage. Main line grease buildup. Kitchen drain connects to main sewer line. Grease enters main line. Coats main line interior. Traps sewage solids. Main line backs up into house. Major problem. See drain and sewer services.

Commercial Kitchen Grease Traps

Restaurants required to have grease traps. Intercept grease before it enters sewer system. Trap fills with grease, gets pumped out regularly. Prevents grease from clogging city sewer lines. Residential kitchens do not have grease traps. All grease goes into drain system. Your responsibility to prevent grease entry. See commercial plumbing for restaurant requirements.

Right Way to Dispose of Grease

Let grease cool in pan. Pour into container. Old coffee can, glass jar, metal can. Wait until solid. Throw container in trash. Wipe remaining grease from pan with paper towel. Discard towel in trash. Wash pan with hot soapy water. Minimal residual grease goes down drain. Acceptable amount. Small amounts of grease unavoidable. Washing dishes always sends some grease down. Monthly hot water flush handles residual grease. See drain maintenance. But pouring grease directly down drain creates problems.

Clearing Grease Clogs

Boiling water sometimes works. For light recent buildup. Boil large pot of water. Pour directly into drain slowly. Can melt light grease coating. For older buildup not enough. Chemical drain cleaners work on grease. Also damage pipes. Trade short-term fix for long-term pipe damage. See safe drain cleaning. Professional hydro jetting. High-pressure hot water. Blasts grease off pipe walls. Complete clearing. See hydro jetting services. Only permanent solution for serious grease buildup.

Garbage Disposal and Grease

Disposal does not help with grease. Grinds food but does not affect grease. Grease still goes down drain liquid. Still solidifies in pipes. Disposal makes it worse sometimes. Grinds food into smaller particles. Small particles plus grease create dense clog. Harder to clear than large particles alone. Never pour grease into disposal. See disposal use guide.

Long-Term Damage

Grease clogs build over years. Pipes narrow gradually. Drain slows progressively. By the time you notice, significant buildup exists. Clearing one clog does not remove all grease. Buildup remains. Next clog comes faster. Eventually pipes need replacement or permanent clearing. Prevention is easier than dealing with accumulated grease damage.

Just Do not Pour Grease Down

Simple rule. Saves thousands in plumbing repairs. Let it cool. Throw it away. That is it.
