Every gas appliance in your home has a connection point where the hard gas piping transitions to the appliance itself. This connection typically uses a flexible corrugated metal connector and a shutoff valve. These connections need to meet code requirements, use approved components, and be properly tested after installation. When an appliance is replaced, the connection work needs to happen before the new appliance can run. When a kitchen is being remodeled, gas appliances need to be properly disconnected before demo work begins. Here is how gas appliance connection and disconnection works in NWA homes.

Need a gas appliance connected or disconnected? Call Bearnwa at 479-321-1313. Appliance connection work is part of our complete Gas Line Services lineup.

What Connection Work Involves

Shutoff valve installation. A properly accessible shutoff valve within 6 feet of the appliance is required by code in most NWA jurisdictions. Many older installations are missing this valve or have valves in poor condition.

Flexible connector installation. The corrugated metal hose between the hard gas pipe and the appliance. Must be the correct length (18 inch and 36 inch are most common), correct diameter, and UL-listed for gas use.

Pressure test after connection. All new connections receive a soap-bubble and electronic detector leak check after installation. We do not assume a new connection is leak-free without confirming it.

Appliance commissioning. Confirming gas flow to the appliance, lighting pilots where applicable, and verifying proper operation.

Common Gas Appliance Connections

Gas range and cooktop. Freestanding ranges and cooktop drops typically use 1/2 inch supply with a 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch shutoff and flexible connector. Anti-tip device installation sometimes part of the same service call.

Gas water heater. New water heater installation always includes connection work. See our water heater services for the full picture.

Gas dryer. 1/2 inch supply, shutoff valve, flexible connector, and often a periscope or direct vent connection as well. For the Arkansas rules on self-connecting, see can you connect a gas dryer yourself in Arkansas.

Gas fireplace and fireplace inserts. Gas log sets in existing fireplaces. Dedicated supply line sometimes needed if no existing fireplace gas connection.

Gas furnace. New furnace installation always includes supply connection work, sometimes new supply line sections.

Gas generator. Standby generators running on natural gas. Often involve longer supply runs. See our outdoor gas line work on adding a gas line for outdoor applications.

Gas pool or spa heater. Often requires dedicated supply line of appropriate capacity.

Disconnection Work

Disconnection is required before renovation demolition, appliance removal, and certain repairs.

Pre-renovation disconnection. Before kitchen remodels involving range or cooktop relocation. Before laundry room work. Before any demolition in areas with gas appliances.

Appliance removal for replacement. The old appliance needs proper disconnection including capping the line if the new appliance will not connect immediately.

Converting from gas to electric. Some NWA homeowners switch specific appliances from gas to electric. Gas supply needs to be properly capped, not just abandoned with fittings loose.

Sale-related. Sometimes required when a gas appliance is not included in a home sale.

Proper disconnection means capping the open gas connection, verifying the cap with a pressure test, and confirming no gas odor at the location.

Why Professional Connection Matters

Gas appliance connection is the type of work that looks simple until something is wrong.

The wrong flexible connector can fail. Pre-1974 uncoated brass connectors have a documented failure history. The wrong type of pipe thread compound can be incompatible with gas. Kinked flexible connectors fail under vibration. Shutoff valves installed at the wrong location are not accessible in an emergency.

A licensed plumber with gas experience does this work correctly every time and tests it to confirm. See our related reading on can a plumber find a gas leak for more on gas competency standards.

Flexible Connector Replacement Schedule

Flexible connectors have a service life. The old uncoated brass type should already be replaced in any NWA home that still has them. Modern stainless steel connectors are rated for longer service but still have recommended replacement intervals.

Most manufacturer recommendations suggest inspecting flexible connectors every 5 years and replacing every 10 to 15 years regardless of visible condition. Age-related metal fatigue is not visible until failure.

This is a cheap part of a gas service visit and a reasonable safety practice.

What Connection and Disconnection Costs

Service Typical NWA cost
Standard appliance connection $185 to $385
Appliance connection requiring new shutoff valve $285 to $485
Appliance connection with flexible connector upgrade $185 to $385
Appliance disconnection and cap $185 to $385
Multiple appliance visit (same day, same house) $385 to $785
Flexible connector replacement only $145 to $285

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any flexible connector at the hardware store?
No. Must be UL-listed for gas use, correct diameter, correct length, and undamaged. Old style uncoated brass should never be used.

Do I need to turn off gas to the whole house for appliance connection?
Only the local shutoff at the appliance location if one exists. Sometimes the zone shutoff. Rarely the whole house.

How long does a typical appliance connection take?
1 to 2 hours per appliance including pressure test and commissioning.

What if the gas appliance was already connected when I moved in and seems fine?
Have it inspected periodically. Previous owners may not have used proper materials or updated connectors on schedule.
