Propane tanks are convenient right up until they run out in the middle of a cookout. A permanent natural gas line to an outdoor grill eliminates that problem entirely. The grill runs whenever you want it to, for as long as you want, at lower fuel cost than propane, with no tanks to swap, store, or haul. Permanent gas lines to outdoor cooking and living areas are one of the most popular additions in NWA properties, and the installation is more straightforward than most homeowners expect. Here is what the project actually involves.

Why Permanent Gas Beats Propane for Most Outdoor Setups

Never runs out. Natural gas is supplied continuously by the utility. No tank management.

Lower cost per BTU. Natural gas typically costs 30 to 50 percent less per BTU than propane in NWA. Frequent outdoor cooking adds up.

Lower maintenance. No tanks to inspect, recertify, or replace. No storage concerns.

Better outdoor kitchen integration. Permanent line runs to fixed outdoor kitchen installations cleanly without visible tank connections.

Property value. Permanent outdoor gas lines add to property value in ways that portable tanks do not.

Downsides are real too. Natural gas requires a permanent supply connection. If you move, the line stays. And areas not served by natural gas utility require propane lines, which still need tank storage.

Common Outdoor Gas Applications in NWA

Fixed gas grill. Most common request. A 1/2 inch line run to an outdoor kitchen or dedicated grill location with a shutoff valve and quick-connect.

Fire pit or fire table. Gas fire pits have become extremely popular in NWA outdoor spaces. Usually lower BTU demand than grills, sometimes running off the same line.

Outdoor fireplace. Gas log sets in outdoor fireplaces. Similar installation to indoor fireplace lines but with weatherproofing requirements.

Pool and spa heater. High BTU demand. Sometimes requires upsized supply line or meter review.

Outdoor kitchen with multiple appliances. Multiple connections including grill, side burner, patio heater, and fire feature. Requires careful total BTU calculation.

Generator hookup. Standby generators using natural gas supply. Eliminates propane or diesel fuel management during power outages.

What the Installation Involves

Step one. Route planning. From the gas meter or existing interior line, the most practical path to the outdoor location. Usually runs through the crawl space or basement, then out through the foundation wall, then underground to the outdoor location.

Step two. Underground burial. PE polyethylene gas line buried at proper depth (18 inches minimum in most NWA jurisdictions for residential outdoor lines). Yellow gas pipe, not general utility pipe.

Step three. Penetration and connection. Proper sleeve through foundation wall. Connection to existing gas system inside.

Step four. Outdoor termination. Above-ground riser, shutoff valve, and quick-connect or hard-piped connection at the appliance location.

Step five. Pressure test. Full pressure test before putting into service.

Step six. Permit inspection. City inspector verifies code compliance.

Total installation time. 4 to 8 hours for most standard outdoor extensions. Longer for complex outdoor kitchens or long runs.

What It Costs in NWA

Project type Typical NWA cost
Grill line (under 30 feet) $785 to $1,285
Grill line (30 to 60 feet) $1,085 to $1,985
Fire pit addition $685 to $1,485
Outdoor fireplace gas logs $785 to $1,585
Pool or spa heater line $985 to $2,485
Full outdoor kitchen (multiple connections) $1,785 to $4,985
Generator hookup $785 to $1,985

Equipment Compatibility

Not all outdoor grills and appliances are compatible with natural gas out of the box. Most grill manufacturers offer models or conversion kits for either natural gas or propane. The orifices are different sizes. A propane grill cannot simply be connected to natural gas without a conversion kit.

Before installation, confirm the grill or appliance is either already natural gas or has an available conversion kit. Most major brands (Weber, Char-Broil, Napoleon) offer conversion options.

NWA-Specific Considerations

Clay soil common in much of NWA generally is good for underground gas line burial. Rocky areas in Bella Vista and parts of Fayetteville may require special installation approaches.

Winters in NWA can drop below freezing, but generally not severe enough to require additional freeze protection for properly buried gas lines at 18 inch depth.

NWA summer heat does not affect underground lines but outdoor appliance connections and flexible connectors should be protected from direct UV exposure where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just run the gas line myself?
No. Arkansas requires licensed plumber with gas certification for any gas line work. Permits cannot be pulled without this.

How long does the line last underground?
PE gas pipe for underground use is rated 50 plus years in normal soil conditions.

Can I add to the line later if I expand my outdoor space?
Yes. Properly installed with appropriate shutoff points, outdoor gas lines can be extended later.

Do I need to do anything before calling for installation?
Know the approximate location you want gas delivered to. Have your grill or appliance model information ready so we can confirm natural gas compatibility.
