Optimal Temperature: 120°F

Recommended setting for most homes. Hot enough for showers, dishwashing, laundry. Cool enough to prevent scalding. Efficient temperature for operation. Lower operating costs than higher temps. Balances safety, comfort, and efficiency. Works for most households without special needs.

Why Not Higher Than 120°F

Scald risk increases. 120°F water takes 5 minutes to cause serious burn. 130°F takes 30 seconds. 140°F takes 5 seconds. Higher temps dangerous for kids and elderly. Energy waste. Every 10°F above 120 adds 3-5% to operating cost. Over a year that adds up. See operating costs. Faster tank corrosion. Hotter water accelerates tank deterioration. Shortens water heater life. Mineral buildup. Higher temps cause more mineral precipitation. More sediment in tank. More frequent flushing needed.

Why Not Lower Than 120°F

Bacteria growth. Legionella bacteria multiply below 120°F. Rare but serious respiratory infection. 120°F prevents bacteria growth. Dishwasher performance. Some dishwashers need 120°F input for proper sanitization. Lower temp means less effective cleaning. Personal preference. Some households prefer hotter showers. 120°F is adequate for most but not all.

Exceptions: When to Go Higher

Immune-compromised household members. 130°F provides extra bacteria protection. Monitor for scald risk. Large household with simultaneous hot water demand. 130°F provides more usable hot water volume. Alternative: larger tank or tankless system. See water heater options. Dishwasher without internal heating element. Older dishwashers. 130°F input needed for proper sanitization.

How to Check Current Temperature

Thermometer at faucet. Run hot water 3 minutes. Hold thermometer under stream. Read temperature. Should be within 3-5°F of setting. Gas water heaters have temperature dial. Usually on gas valve. Often marked “Low, Medium, High” not actual temperatures. Low = 120°F. Medium = 130°F. High = 140°F. Electric water heaters have thermostats behind access panels. Usually two panels, two thermostats. Upper and lower. Both should match.

How to Adjust Temperature

Gas units: Turn dial toward lower setting. Wait 3 hours. Test water temperature at tap. Adjust again if needed. Dial does not always indicate exact temperature. Test to verify.

Electric units: Shut off power at breaker. Remove access panel(s). Adjust thermostat screw or slider. Small adjustments. Clockwise usually increases, counterclockwise decreases. Replace panel(s). Restore power. Wait 3-4 hours for new setting to stabilize. Test temperature at tap. Both thermostats should be set identically. Upper thermostat heats first, lower maintains.

Seasonal Adjustments

Some people lower temperature in summer. Incoming water already warmer. Less heating needed for comfort. Raise temperature in winter. Incoming water is colder. More heating needed to reach comfort. Energy savings modest. 2-3% difference. Hassle factor usually not worth it. Set once, leave it.
