Information That Narrows Estimates
Age of the home. 1960s home with original plumbing is different work than 2020 new construction. Older homes have surprises. Estimates need buffer room.
Existing plumbing materials. Copper, PEX, galvanized, PVC. Each affects the work scope. Copper to copper replacement is easier than galvanized to PEX conversion.
Access to the work area. Crawl space work costs more than basement work. Tight spaces take longer. Photos help the plumber understand access before arriving.
Specific symptoms. “Drain is slow” is vague. “Kitchen sink drains but backs up in 30 seconds when garbage disposal runs” is specific. Specific descriptions lead to specific estimates.
Questions to Ask

Refusing to provide any price range. Every plumber should be able to ballpark common work. Pressure to decide immediately. Legitimate plumbers let you think about it. Requiring full payment upfront. Standard is deposit or payment after completion. Cash-only pricing that is “cheaper.” Often means no permits, no insurance, no recourse if something goes wrong.
