Three pipe materials dominate residential plumbing in Arkansas today. PVC and its cousin CPVC. Copper. PEX. Each has supporters who think their preferred material is clearly best, and each has real strengths and real limitations. What Each Material Is

PVC and CPVC. Polyvinyl chloride plastic. PVC is rigid white plastic used primarily for drain, waste, and vent lines. CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is rated for hot water supply use. Both are joined by solvent welding.

Copper. Pure copper tubing in various thicknesses (Type M is thinner, Type L is mid-grade, Type K is thickest). Joined by soldering with lead-free solder or by mechanical compression fittings.

PEX. Cross-linked polyethylene. Flexible plastic tubing in various colors (red for hot, blue for cold, white for either). Joined by crimping, expansion, or push-on fittings.

When PVC and CPVC Fit Best

Drain, waste, vent applications. PVC dominates these lines because of its chemical resistance and low cost. Standard in NWA drain installations.

Cold water supply in milder applications. Less common today as PEX has displaced PVC for supply.

Hot water supply with CPVC specifically. Can be cost-effective when budget is tight, though PEX often wins on similar budget for hot water service.

PVC weaknesses include brittleness in cold conditions, susceptibility to UV degradation if exposed, and solvent welded joints that can fail if assembly was rushed.

When Copper Fits Best

Homes with traditional aesthetic preferences. Copper has a classic look that many homeowners value, especially in exposed plumbing.

Higher-end new construction. Often specified because of perceived quality and longevity.

Stub-out connections at fixtures. Even in PEX systems, copper stubs at fixtures are common.

Repair connections to existing copper. Same material connections avoid galvanic concerns.

Copper weaknesses include vulnerability to pinhole leaks from aggressive water chemistry, freeze damage, higher cost both in material and installation, and longer install time.

Note that Type M copper used heavily in NWA homes 1970 to 1995 has a documented pinhole leak issue. Type L is the current better choice.

When PEX Fits Best

Most modern residential supply applications. PEX dominates new construction and repipe work in NWA today for good reason.

Repipe projects in existing homes. The flexibility allows fishing through walls and floors with minimal demolition.

Freeze-prone locations. PEX expands when water freezes inside without bursting in many cases. Not freeze-proof but freeze-tolerant.

Cost-conscious projects. Lower material and labor costs than copper at comparable quality.

Long runs without joints. PEX comes in long rolls allowing continuous runs without intermediate joints (which are common failure points).

PEX weaknesses include sensitivity to UV light if exposed, some rodent damage cases, and earlier generations had issues that have since been addressed.

The Modern Standard Approach in NWA

Today’s typical NWA repipe project uses PEX for most supply runs with copper stubs at fixtures. This combines the practical advantages of PEX (cost, flexibility, freeze tolerance) with the traditional appearance and connection reliability of copper at the visible junction points.
