Gas leak. Carbon monoxide leak. The terms sometimes get used interchangeably and the appropriate response is similar enough that the confusion does not always cause harm. But the two are genuinely different problems with different causes, different detection, and meaningfully different response priorities. Mixing them up can mean missing a serious threat or overreacting to one that is not yet present. Here is the clear distinction between natural gas leaks and carbon monoxide exposure in NWA homes, and what each one demands.

What Each One Is

Natural gas leak. Unburned natural gas (primarily methane) escaping from supply lines or connections. Methane is naturally odorless. Utilities add mercaptan to give the rotten egg smell that warns of leaks. The gas is flammable and explosive at certain concentrations in air.

Carbon monoxide. A colorless, odorless, tasteless gas produced when combustion is incomplete. CO is produced by gas appliances burning improperly, by vehicle exhaust, by wood fires, by grills, and by any incomplete combustion. It is poisonous, not flammable.

The two are related (CO can come from gas appliances) but they are distinct threats.

Where They Come From

Natural gas leaks come from. Damaged or aging supply lines. Failing connections at appliances or meters. Cracked appliance components. Damage to underground service lines. Any breach in the system that should contain pressurized gas.

Carbon monoxide comes from. Malfunctioning gas appliances (especially water heaters, furnaces, dryers, stoves). Blocked or damaged venting. Backdrafting where exhaust enters living space. Running engines in attached garages. Improperly used grills, generators, or heaters indoors. Wood fires with damaged chimneys.

How to Tell Which You Have

Natural gas signs. Distinctive rotten egg smell. Sometimes hissing sounds near appliances or lines. Dead vegetation near buried lines. Sudden gas bill increases.

Carbon monoxide signs. No smell at all (this is the dangerous part). Symptoms in occupants such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, confusion. Symptoms that improve when away from home and return when home. Pets showing symptoms before humans. Multiple family members feeling unwell at the same time.

The smell test reliably separates the two. If you smell something, it is gas. If everyone feels sick with no smell, it is potentially CO.

Detectors for Each

Different detectors. They do not overlap.

Natural gas detectors. Detect methane and other combustible gases. Often combined with smoke detection in newer models. Should be present in any home with gas appliances.

Carbon monoxide detectors. Detect CO specifically. Different sensor technology than gas detectors. Should be present on every floor of any home with combustion appliances or attached garage.

The two cannot substitute for each other. A CO detector will not warn of a gas leak. A gas detector will not warn of CO. Most homes need both types.

Response to Each

Natural gas response. Leave the home immediately. No electrical switches, no flames, no ignition sources. Open doors and windows on the way out if practical. Call from outside. Wait for professional clearance.

Carbon monoxide response. Leave the home immediately. Get fresh air. Seek medical attention for anyone with symptoms. Call 911 for medical emergency. Have appliances inspected before returning. Replace or repair the malfunctioning equipment.

Common CO Sources We See in NWA

Malfunctioning water heaters. The most common single source. Blocked or damaged venting, dirty burners, or aging combustion chambers can produce CO.

Old furnaces. Heat exchanger cracks let CO from combustion enter the air supply.

Improperly maintained gas dryers. Blocked venting can cause CO to vent into the home.

Attached garage exhaust. Cars warming up in winter with the garage door closed.

Improvised heating sources. Charcoal grills used indoors during power outages. Generators run too close to the house.

Annual inspection of gas appliances catches most of these before they become hazards.

Prevention for Both

Install detectors for both gas and CO on every floor.

Schedule annual inspection of all gas appliances.

Check appliance venting regularly. Bird nests, debris, and damage block venting.

Never run engines or fuel powered equipment indoors.

Address any unusual symptoms (headache, fatigue) seriously, especially when affecting multiple people.

Keep gas appliances properly maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a gas leak also produce carbon monoxide?
Indirectly yes. If gas leaks into a confined area where partial combustion occurs, CO can result. But normal raw gas leaks are gas, not CO.

Should I have separate detectors or combination units?
Combination units exist and work well. Either approach is fine.

How often do detectors need replacement?
Most CO detectors are 7 to 10 year lifespan. Gas detectors typically 5 to 10 years. Replace when expired.

If only one person in the house feels symptoms, is it still CO?
Possible but less likely. Symptoms in multiple people simultaneously is a stronger CO indicator.
