Full Service Construction, Restoration, and Home Services

When you find out your sewer line needs replacing, the first question is almost always how much. The second question is how long. The second question matters more than people realize because you cannot really use your home normally during the work, and accurate scheduling affects everything from hotel costs to family stress levels. Here is the realistic day by day breakdown for sewer line work in NWA homes.

Planning a sewer line replacement? Call Bearnwa at 479-321-1313. We provide accurate timelines as part of our Sewer Line Repair & Replacement NWA service.

Timeline by Method

Spot repair on a small section. 1 day. Excavate the damaged section, replace pipe, backfill. Use of water minimally restricted during the work day. Surface restoration follows but does not affect water use.

Traditional full line excavation. 3 to 7 working days. Most NWA traditional jobs run 4 to 5 days from first dig to backfill complete. Surface restoration (landscape, driveway, sod) takes additional time depending on extent.

Trenchless pipe bursting. 1 to 3 working days. Two pit excavations, pull through the new pipe, reconnect at both ends. Surface impact minimal.

Cure in place lining (CIPP). 1 to 2 working days. No excavation. Access through existing cleanouts. Bond curing takes a few hours.

Hydro jet plus root inhibitor (not replacement, but related). 2 to 3 hours total visit.

What Affects the Schedule

Line length and depth. Longer and deeper lines take longer. Most NWA residential sewer lines run 4 to 6 feet deep but some go 8+ feet, especially in hilly terrain like Bella Vista.

Surface conditions. Concrete driveways, brick patios, and mature landscaping all extend the timeline. Open yard work is fastest.

Soil conditions. Rocky soil in parts of Bella Vista and Fayetteville slows excavation. Sandy or loamy soil in newer Bentonville developments is faster.

Weather. Heavy rain delays excavation. Frozen ground delays winter work. NWA spring and fall are typically fastest seasons.

Permit timeline. Most NWA cities turn around permits in 5 to 10 business days for standard residential work. Some larger projects need 2 to 3 weeks.

Surprise findings. If excavation reveals additional damage, unexpected utilities, or unusual conditions, schedule extends.

Day by Day Picture (Traditional 4 to 5 Day Job)

Day zero (1 to 2 weeks before). Camera inspection, scope confirmation, permit pull, equipment scheduling, utility locates marked.

Day one. Site preparation. Equipment delivered. Surface materials carefully removed. Initial excavation begins.

Day two. Excavation continues to depth. Old line exposed. Damaged sections identified.

Day three. Old line removed. New line installed at correct slope. Tested for proper flow.

Day four. Inspection by city building department if required. Backfill begins after inspection passes.

Day five. Backfill complete. Initial surface restoration. Equipment removed. Site cleaned.

Days following. Final landscape, sod, concrete, or driveway restoration. May take additional days depending on conditions.

What You Can and Cannot Do During Work

Days when the line is open. No water use in the house. Plan for hotel, family stays, or arrangements with neighbors.

Days when temporary connections are in place. Limited water use possible. Some plumbing functions but not full normal operation.

After backfill and inspection. Normal water use returns. Surface restoration does not affect plumbing.

For traditional 4 to 5 day jobs, you are typically without normal water use for 2 to 3 days in the middle of the schedule.

Trenchless Schedule Advantage

Trenchless methods compress the no water phase to 1 day or less in most cases. The pit excavations are small and the line replacement itself happens fast. The cost premium over traditional excavation is often justified by the schedule alone.

How to Plan

Book the work for a period when you can be flexible. Long weekends, vacation weeks, or planned travel work well. Avoid scheduling around major life events where lack of water would be problematic.

Have a backup arrangement ready. Family, friends, or a hotel within 5 minutes of the property. Even on schedule jobs, day to day operation varies.

Confirm landscape restoration timeline separately. The plumbing work and the yard restoration are often on different schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work on weekends to compress schedule?
Sometimes, for an additional cost. Weekend work also depends on city inspector availability.

What if it rains during the project?
Excavation typically pauses. Schedule extends by the duration of rain plus any time needed for site to dry enough to work safely.

Will my water be off the whole time?
No, only on days the line itself is open. Day one and day five typically have full water use.

Schedule with Confidence

Accurate timeline starts with accurate diagnosis. Bearnwa provides realistic schedules before work begins so you can plan around the actual project, not around best case guesses.
