Anode rod sounds technical. Is kind of boring. Also is the reason your water heater lasts 10 years instead of 5. Here is what this sacrificial component does and why replacement matters. Part of our complete How to Maintain Your Water Heater Year-Round.

What an Anode Rod Actually Is
Metal rod mounted in top of water heater tank. Magnesium or aluminum core with steel wire. 3/4-inch diameter. 42-44 inches long typically. Screws into threaded opening in tank top. One rod in most residential tanks. Two rods in some larger tanks.
How It Works
Electrochemical protection. Fancy term for rust prevention. Water plus metal equals corrosion. Anode rod corrodes instead of tank. Rod is more reactive than tank steel. Corrosion attacks rod first. Tank stays protected. Sacrificial anode. Rod gets sacrificed so tank survives. When rod is consumed, corrosion attacks tank. Tank fails 2-3 years after rod failure. See when to replace water heaters.
When to Check the Rod
5 years after installation for first check. Sooner in hard water areas. NWA water varies but many areas have hard water. Check every 3 years in hard water. Annual check after 8 years. Water heater aging, rod consumption accelerating. Signs rod is consumed. Rusty hot water from taps. Rotten egg smell from hot water. Tank making rumbling noises. All suggest rod is gone and tank corrosion starting.
How to Inspect Anode Rod
Shut off power or gas. Let tank cool. Turn off cold water supply. Relieve pressure by opening hot water tap somewhere. Locate anode rod access. Top of tank, usually hexagonal fitting. Use socket wrench to unscrew rod. 1-1/16 inch socket common size. Rod stuck. Spray with penetrating oil, wait, try again. Still stuck means pro help needed. Pull rod out. Inspect condition. Rod more than half consumed (under half-inch diameter at thinnest). Replace rod. Rod still thick. Reinstall with thread tape, check in 2 years.
Replacing Anode Rod
New rod costs $20-60 at hardware stores. Magnesium rods for soft to medium-hard water. Aluminum rods for hard water and sulfur smell issues. Flexible rods available for tight spaces. Standard rods are 44 inches. Flexible rods link in segments, fit in shorter ceiling spaces. Apply thread tape to threads. Screw into tank until snug. Do not overtighten. Refill tank, restore power, check for leaks.
Why Replacement Matters
Tank without functioning anode rod fails in 2-5 years. Tank with rod properly maintained lasts 10-15 years. Rod replacement costs $60-150 DIY, $150-300 professional. Water heater replacement costs $1,200-1,800. See replacement costs. One rod replacement can add 5 years to tank life. Saves one complete replacement. Pays for itself many times over.
Electric Water Heaters and Anode Rods
Electric tanks have rods too. Same function, same maintenance needs. Slightly harder to access sometimes. Heating elements in the way. Still worth checking and replacing. Same lifespan benefit.
Tankless Water Heaters and Anode Rods
Tankless units do not have anode rods. No tank to protect. Different maintenance needs. See tankless water heaters for that system.
Boring Component, Big Impact
Nobody thinks about anode rods until water heater fails early. Check it every few years. Replace when needed. Double your water heater lifespan.
