Exterior Wall Pipes

Pipes in walls that face outside. Kitchen sink on north wall. Bathroom on exterior wall. These pipes get cold air on one side, heated house air on other. Still enough to freeze. North-facing walls freeze first. Less sun exposure. Stays cold longer. Pipes here need insulation. See pipe insulation guide. Cabinet doors open during freeze. Lets warm air circulate around pipes. Simple prevention.

Crawl Space Pipes

Unheated crawl space equals outdoor temperature. All pipes here are vulnerable. Supply lines. Drain lines stay warmer from hot water flow but supply lines freeze easily. Insulate every pipe in crawl space. No exceptions. Heat tape on problem sections. Pipes on exterior walls of crawl space especially. Pipes near vents. Crawl space vents let cold air directly onto pipes. Close vents before winter or insulate pipes near vents heavily.

Unheated Garage Pipes

Water heater in garage common in NWA. Supply lines run through garage to reach house. All freeze without protection. Garage door opens. Blast of cold air on exposed pipes. Recipe for freeze. Insulate water heater connections. Supply and discharge lines both. Insulate any pipes visible in garage. Heat tape if garage gets below 20°F regularly.

Pipes in Exterior Walls of Finished Basements

Finished basement walls insulated. Great. But insulation is between studs. Pipes in those walls sit against cold concrete on outside. Still freeze. Open basement ceiling below first floor. Pipes in floor joists above basement freeze when basement is unheated. Heat basement in winter. Minimal heat prevents freeze. Small space heater in basement costs less than burst pipe repair.

Outdoor Hose Bibs

Most obvious freeze risk. Water still in line after hose removal freezes. Backs up into pipe inside wall. Pipe bursts inside wall where you cannot see it. Damage shows up when ice thaws. Shut off interior valve. Drain outdoor faucet. Install insulated faucet cover. All three steps necessary. See frozen pipe prevention.

Pipes in Attics

Less common but some homes have supply lines in attics. Worst freeze location. Attic is outside temperature or colder. Heat rises, yes, but attic stays cold. Pipes here need heavy insulation plus heat tape. Consider rerouting pipes out of attic if possible. Long-term solution.

Specific Vulnerable Sections

Pipes where they enter house through foundation. Transition point from buried to exposed. Less insulation here usually. Short exposed sections between heated areas. 3 feet of pipe between garage and house. Short but fully exposed. Freezes easily. Pipes behind appliances against exterior walls. Refrigerator against north wall. Pipes behind fridge freeze because appliance blocks heat. Pull appliance out or leave cabinet door open during freeze nights.
