Foam Pipe Insulation
Split foam tubes. Most common insulation type. Slice along one side, snap over pipe. Available in different diameters to fit pipe sizes. Half-inch pipe gets half-inch insulation. Three-quarter pipe gets three-quarter insulation. Measure before buying. Cheap. $1-3 per 6-foot length at hardware stores. Easy DIY install. No tools needed. Works well for crawl spaces and attics. R-value around 3-4 depending on thickness. Adequate for NWA winter protection. Seal seams with tape. Insulation tape or foil tape seals split. Prevents heat loss through gap.
Fiberglass Pipe Wrap
Pink or yellow fiberglass insulation material. Wrap around pipes, secure with tape or wire. Higher R-value than foam. Better protection in extreme cold. Messier to install. Fiberglass irritates skin. Wear gloves and long sleeves. Use in combination with foam. Foam sleeves first, fiberglass wrap over foam for extra protection. Basement pipes especially. Exposed basement pipes benefit from double insulation.
Heat Tape for Problem Pipes
Electric heating cable wraps around pipe. Plug into outlet, cable heats when cold. Two types. Self-regulating heat tape adjusts output based on temperature. More expensive, safer, uses less power. Constant-wattage heat tape runs full power when plugged in. Cheaper, uses more power, needs thermostat to prevent overheating. Install heat tape before insulation. Where Insulation Matters Most
Exterior wall pipes. North-facing walls especially. Cold air on one side, minimal heat on other. Crawl space pipes. Unheated crawl spaces get nearly as cold as outside. All pipes need insulation. Unheated garage pipes. Water heater in garage. Supply lines in garage. All freeze without protection. Attic pipes. Less common but some homes have supply lines in attics. These freeze easily. Outdoor exposed pipes between house and detached building. Workshop, garage, studio. Insulate entire run.
Insulation Installation Tips
Start from farthest point. Work back toward heated areas. Ensures complete coverage, no gaps. Secure with cable ties or tape every 3 feet. Prevents insulation from sliding off pipes. Insulate fittings and valves. These are weak points for freeze. Use foam insulation or fiberglass around fittings. Overlap foam sections. Quarter-inch overlap prevents gaps. Seal with tape. Protect insulation from moisture. Wet insulation loses R-value. Wrap with plastic or use foil-faced insulation in damp areas.
What Not to Use
Newspaper or rags. Not rated insulation. Minimal protection. Duct tape alone. Does not insulate. Only seals gaps. Spray foam around active plumbing. Cannot access pipes later for repairs. Use removable insulation on accessible pipes.
